Carroll County residents can be proud of themselves. Recycling at the CCH Solid Waste District's Carroll County recycling sites increased by just over 9 percent in 2009. A total of 413 tons of recyclable material was taken to the county's 12 drop-off recycling sites in 2009, compared to 379 tons in 2009.
"We couldn't have done it without the help from the residents and the support of the host communities in Carroll County," says Chris Jacobs, executive director of the district. "This is a perfect example of the county's commitment to waste reduction and we want to thank everyone for recycling and helping conserve resources."
The district operates recycling sites in the following Carroll County communities: Augusta, Carrollton, Dellroy, Harlem Springs, Kilgore, Lake Mohawk, Leesville, Malvern, Mechanicstown, New Harrisburg, Perrysville, and Sherrodsville. Materials accepted at these sites include newspapers, office papers, magazines, phone books, steel and aluminum cans, brown, green and clear glass bottles, and numbers one through five, and number seven - plastic bottles and packaging.
Recycling is just one of the ways residents can reduce waste and conserve. Being conscientious while shopping, often called pre-cycling, is another way to reduce waste. When shopping, look for products with the least amount of packaging, and only buy items that come in recyclable packaging. For example, buy nuts and bolts in bulk, and buy milk and juice in plastic bottles instead of waxed cardboard. Reusable bags are widely available and can often be found as a "give-away" item, and several stores give discounts for using your own bag.
