Plant a pinwheel for Stark County's abused and neglected children

Published:

Canton -- On Wednesday April 7, Stark County Job and Family Services will be hosting Pinwheels for Prevention and raising the Children's Memorial Flag in recognition of April as Child Abuse/Neglect Awareness Month. Volunteers will plant a pinwheel for each incidence of child abuse/neglect in 2009, a total of 2,988 pinwheels.

The Children's Memorial Flag was created by the Child Welfare League of America to memorialize children who have died as a result of violence. Canton Mayor William Healy is scheduled to read a proclamation when the flag is raised on the downtown square immediately following the pinwheel planting.

The events will be preceded by a community brunch starting at 10:30 a.m. in the Renkert Building at 300 Market Ave. North in downtown Canton. Pinwheels for Prevention will take place at 11:30 a.m. in the Kresge lot across the street. Pinwheels can be dedicated for $5 each. All proceeds will be donated to Project KARE, a 501c3 charitable organization that benefits Stark County's abused and neglected children.

For more information about the event or to purchase a pinwheel, contact Bill Burgess at 330-451-8869 or see www.youcanstark.org.
