The U.S. House of Representatives, under the FY11 Transportation, Housing and Urban Development Appropriations bill approved $500,000 for the City of Canton and $800,000 to the Stark Area Regional Transit Authority.
SARTA will use this funding to purchase four 35-foot buses powered by either diesel/electric hybrid engines, or a hydrogen/gasoline fuel blend. These buses will replace aging buses that are due for upgrades.
The $500,000 for the city of Canton will be used to help with the Mahoning Road Economic Development Project. Mahoning Road is a major economic transportation arterial street in northeast Canton. According to the city, it is a gateway to the city and directly serves a residential neighborhood of more than 10,000 residents and a commercial district consisting of nearly 65 businesses, manufacturers, distributors, and service providers who collectively employ more than 2,700 workers. Additionally the corridor has an average daily traffic count of 14,200 vehicles.
The Appropriations Bill for Transportation, Housing and Urban Development passed the full House late last week and is now before the Senate Appropriations Committee before going to the full Senate for a vote. This bill passed the House $1.3 billion under the president's request.
