Thirty students from Brown Local and Minerva school districts participated in this year's Stark County Area Math Tournament sponsored by the Greater Canton Council of Teachers of Mathematics and the Stark County Educational Service Center.
The tournament is held each year to recognize students' achievements in mathematics, provide enriched mathematical practice, and provide mathematically talented students with an opportunity to connect with peers from other schools.
Nearly 800 fifth-, sixth-, and seventh-grade students from 20 school districts competed in the categories of mental computation, geometry/measurement, number sense, algebra/data analysis/probability, team problem solving, and advanced algebra.
Brown Local students who posted high scores were:
Problem Solving: Zach Babiczuk, Ava Clough, and Hallie Ford, third place.
Algebra/data/probability: Grace Castellucci, fifth place.
Mental computation: Haley Wilkinson, eighth place.
Minerva students who posted high scores were:
Algebra/data/probability: Alaena Locklear and Daisy Ray, first place; Erik Murray, third; Brayden Costea, fourth; Abby Moody, fifth; Anna Larson, sixth; Connor Norris, seventh.
Geometry/measurement: Stephanie Carmine, first; Calee Lukowski, second; Nolan Kibler, fourth; Julia Angione, fifth; Kahlen Burns, sixth; Kaiden Haines, eighth.
Mental computation: Joey Krause and Amelia Foster, fifth; Nick Chaddock, seventh; Ryder Hartshorne and Aden Jones, eighth.
Number sense: Ashton Silverwood, third; Emily Wayts and Connor Shingleton, fourth; Regan Taylor, sixth.
Problem solving: Lincoln Retterer, Braden Sullivan, and Logan Yoder, fifth.
Districts participating alongside Brown Local and Minerva were Alliance, Canton City, Canton Local, Fairless, Green, Jackson, Lake, Louisville, Marlington, Massillon, North Canton, Northwest, Orville, Osnaburg, Perry, Plain, Sandy Valley, and St. Thomas.
