There will soon be another nonagenarian living in Minerva. Mr. Arthur (Goot) Shaw will be turning 90 years young on March 9.
Arthur was born on March 9, 1927 in East Rochester. He was one of seven children born to parents Arthur J. Mildred (Kline) Shaw.
Art enlisted in the U.S. Army at a very young age, and served in the infantry during World War II and the Korean Conflict. He received many honors during his military career including an Expert Infantry Ribbon and the bronze star.
Upon completion of his military service, Arthur returned home to the Minerva area where he married Kay Locke of East Rochester. The couple had three children, Kathy Shaw of Minerva, James Shaw of Carrollton, and Lora Snively of Kendallville, Ind. and a great-granddaughter, Camrian Linderman of Carrollton. Sadly, his wife passed away in 1996.
Arthur worked hard his entire life. For many years, he worked for Canton Soft Water service, where he learned many plumbing skills. For a brief time, he worked for Conrail clearing brush along the railroad. He also spent a brief stint working on an oil rig until sidelined by an accident. Arthur did whatever he had to do to provide for his family. He developed a true passion for tree trimming and started his own tree service on a part-time basis, while holding down full-time job at Burns Cold Forge in Minerva. He worked as a press and shear operator there for 14 years, retiring in 1994.
Art has always lived by the adage that if you were going to make it in this word you had to be tough. All who know him are amazed that he gets around as well as he does. He still drives a vehicle and takes care of things around the house. He is very socially active in the American Legion and the VFW. He enjoys being around people, and has a very good sense of humor.
For his milestone birthday, Art's family would like to honor him with a card shower. It would be appreciated that all friends, relatives and former co-workers reach out by sending a card, letter, or even a phone call. Art would be happy to hear from anyone from his past.
Cards and letters can be sent to him at the following address: Arthur Shaw, 11397 Bower Road, Minerva, OH, 44657.
