Carroll SWCD's tree, plant sale continues

Published:

The Carroll Soil and Water Conservation District's annual tree seedling and plant sale will continue through March.

The objective of the program is to provide low-cost planting material to landowners to enhance the environment for future generations.

Species being offered, with packet quantity and price listed, include: Red raspberry (five, $15), black raspberry (five, $20), blackberry (five, $25), concord grape (one, $10), red canadice grape (one, $10), blueberry (five, $30), arborvitae (five, $6), American larch (five, $6), white pine (25, $15), black walnut (five, $5), bur oak (five, $6), butternut (five, $6), flowering dogwood (five, $6), Northern pecan (five, $6), pussy willow (five, $10), redbud (five, $6), red oak (five, $6), and wild black cherry (five, $5).

Species should be selected based on soil type at the planting site. Conifers transplant easily and require minimum care after planting. Hardwood varieties are more difficult to establish and require annual care after planting. Wildlife species, such as northern pecan and the white flowering dogwood, provide food and shelter for birds and mammals and make a good buffer between open and forested areas.

Landowners can get planting advice from their local SWCD office or a private forestry consultant. Order early for the best selection. Payment must accompany order and may be mailed to Carroll SWCD, 613 N. High St., Carrollton, OH 44615. Orders may be placed until March 31, or until supplies are exhausted.

Seedlings and plants can be picked up 8 a.m.-4 p.m., April 15, and 7 a.m.-4 p.m., April 16.

For more information on Carroll SWCD's tree seedling and plant sale, contact the Carroll SWCD at 330-627-9852. Planting instructions will be available the day of pick-up.

Orders are filled on a first-come, first-served basis with limited quantities available. Seedlings and plants are quality stock. The Carroll SWCD offers no guarantee of a plant's survival due to weather and planting conditions not under its control.

Residents may also order Plantskydd one-quart, pre-mixed liquid or one-pound soluble powder concentrate to prevent wild animals from eating the trees and plants.

The spray is $21 and the powder is $25. The Plantskydd products may be ordered with the tree seedlings and plants.
