The Minerva Board of Education learned about changes to the College Credits Plus at its April 18 meeting.
High School Principal Brett Yeagley and Director of Curriculum and Instruction Becky Miller spoke on the goals and differences between this school year and next year.
"This year we have 37 kids who leave the building to take college credits off-campus," said Yeagley. "Our goal is to keep them in our building as much as possible. This is easier on the students and also promotes and keeps our leadership and top achievers in the building."
The University of Akron does distance learning from the Minerva High School building. Yeagley and Miller said they are still working out the details, but Kent State University Stark Campus is going to send professors to Minerva. Teachers such as Mary Grunder and Jason Mikes are accredited from Kent State University to teach classes that fill certain college electives.
According to Yeagley, approximately 14 students leave the building next year.
Textbooks are the largest cost for the school. In the 2015-2016 school year costs of books were $14,753.31 and the current year cost is $19,111.26. Yeagley stated the district is trying to do a three-year rotation with college books to cut the costs.
"This is offered completely free to students," said Yeagley. "Legally the students are not allowed to purchase the books. Any supplies needed that is not a textbook is covered by the college."
