Minerva Local Schools' held its second annual Top 10 Percent and Honored Educator Night on April 18 at Edgewater Golf Course.
This was a night where 13 seniors, who are attending Minerva High School, R.G. Drage and taking post-secondary courses, were able to pick their favorite educator to honor and explain why they mean so much to them.
"It is a great opportunity for us to be able to get together and honor our kids," said High School Principal and Master of Ceremonies Brett Yeagley. "Not only do they represent the best of our school, but also the community. Outside of the classroom these students hold jobs, volunteer at hospitals, participate in extracurricular activities, post-secondary and more."
Each student got to speak for approximately three minutes about why their chosen honored educator is important to them and the impact they had in their lives. Educators could range from teacher, administrator, secretary, custodian, coach, bus driver, or any other mentor figure.
The 2016-17 top 10 percent students and honorees, respectively, include: Reiley Cowart and Steve Walters; Regan Jones and Lisa Kuehn; Jack Hanley and Bruce Wright; Rebecca Zornick and Allison Jeric; Emily Prendergast; Madison Timmerman and Athena Spinell; Piper Koble and Jan Clark; Brianna Gassman and Nicole Hilliard; Haleigh Holderbaum and Mike Waller; Sarah Fry and Brett Yeagley; McKenna Patterson and Jason Mikes; Nora Yankovich and Mary Grunder; and Madison Mayle and Michelle Rocco.
After each student spoke with their educator beside them, each received a plaque. All students will have their picture in the commons area of the school.
Special thanks was given to the Minerva Local School Board, Minerva Local Schools administrators, Minerva YMCA, Minerva Rotary Club, Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home, Connie Dowling and Rose Hopp, Aaron and Becky Stoller, Minerva Education Foundation and Alumni Association, Minerva Firefighters Association, Edgewater Golf Course, and Dunlap Photography.
Jason Mikes gave the invocation for the evening.
