Teachers within Brown Local Schools District are receiving annual 3 percent pay raises under a new contract with the Brown Local Board of Education.

The school board recently approved the four-year labor pact with the Malvern Educators Association. The contract took effect Saturday and will expire June 30, 2021.

"We are still one of the lower (paying) districts in the area," Interim Superintendent Scott Bowling said. "It gives us a chance to attract high-quality teachers. It will make us more competitive."

Annual base salary for a beginning teacher with a bachelor's degree now is $27,822 under the first year of the contract.

Attempts to contact an agent representing the teachers' union were not successful.
