Minerva to host free contra dance and live music

Published: July 20, 2017 12:00 AM

The Village of Minerva and the Minerva Area Chamber of Commerce will host a free contra dance, featuring live music by One String Short, on Saturday, July 22, 7-9 p.m., on the Municipal Park tennis courts.

Contra dance is a style of folk dancing similar to square dancing, only done in long lines with partners across from each other. All dances are taught and walked through before the music is added and the dance begins. No dance experience is necessary, all ages can participate, and no partner is needed.

One String Short plays traditional Irish dance tunes from the 17, 18, and 19 centuries. The group plays for and calls contra dances throughout northeast Ohio.

Bring your own chairs, have fun learning the dances, or simply enjoy the music. In case of rain, the dance will be held at Minerva High School.

Mark your calendar now for Tropic Sunsations, a steel-drum band, playing the last free summer concert on Saturday, Aug. 26, 7 p.m., on the Municipal Park Stage.
