Sheriff's Office to distribute Narcan kits to at-risk inmates upon release

The Stark County Sheriff's Office will release Narcan to at-risk inmates upon release from the Stark County Jail. The Narcan distributionis an addition to a Pilot Project which began in January 2017.

The project, funded by the Ohio Department of Health and administered through the Stark County Health Department, helps to identify individuals at risk of overdosing. The program includes an in-depth interview, and provides training on the use ofNarcanupon release.

Until now,Narcanwas not provided, and those released were encouraged to contact a Project DAWN site after release.

The Pilot Project is designed to identify best practices among jail systems, and is one of two projects funded in Ohio currently.

The Stark County Sheriff's Office is partnering with Correctional Health Care Group, Inc. andCommQuest.

The need forNarcanwas identified during the project, and three community partners were able to provide support United Way of Stark County, Stark MHAR and Davies Pharmacy. Approximately 75Narcankits will be distributed to the at-risk inmates identified upon release, and through a family training provided twice a month at the jail.
