Pollocks create one-of-a-kind quilt for West Township administrative building

Published:

West Township residents Terry and Fred Pollock, presented an original multimedia landscape quilt to West Township trustees, on Aug. 17.

The quilt, which the Pollocks designed and created at the request of Trustee Herb Eglie, will hang in the administrative building at 8610 Knox School Road behind the trustees' conference table.

Depicting a fall woodland scene, the quilt is made of cotton fabric, with each leaf, tree trunk and branch cut out individually and attached to the backing.

Terry explained that a landscape quilt is built from the background forward, and that she and Fred attached pieces temporarily with glue until they were happy with their placement, then appliqued and quilted them. Additional details were added in paint, marker and pencil, and the border was hand-dyed by sponging on dye.

The quilt, which is the Pollocks first of this type, took approximately one year to complete from conceiving the idea to choosing fabrics to the actual creation.

Terry, who sews wedding gowns and other items, said choosing the fabrics was the most difficult part of the process and assembling the quilt took about two months.

The Pollocks chose the autumn scene, Terry said, because it was fall when they first visited the administration building.

The quilt was donated by Herb and Margaret Eglie, and embroidered on the back is, "Designed for Herb Eglie, Trustee for West Twp., Aug. 16, 2010, by Terry and Fred Pollock."
