Sunflower thrives between a rock and a hard place

Published:

A sunflower growing at the East Rochester home of Brian and Patty Young is thriving despite having taken root between a rock and the Youngs' concrete driveway.

The plant, which sprouted on its own and was not planting by the Youngs, is 15 feet tall and has more than 40 blossoms on it, as well as more than 20 buds.

The Youngs do not grow sunflowers and have no idea where the seed came from. Patty said she fertilized the plant once in the spring and has watered it. The stem, which looks like the trunk of a young tree, is now braced with a board to help the plant stay upright.

Standing with the giant sunflower are (from left) Lauren and Landon Swast, friends of the Youngs, Emily Young, the Youngs' daughter, and Patty Young.
