When the two teams collided in the OHSAA state duals earlier this season, Alliance dominated Minerva on the Aviators' home mat.
The rematch was closer, but the Aviators' prevailed 34-27 on the Lions' mat. Alliance defeated Minerva 52-10 at the Division II state dual.
"We wanted to put the best lineup we could out there," Minerva head coach Chad Hilliard said. "We made some adjustments down low."
Both lineups featured several changes in the rematch. Several wrestlers were bumped. There also were four forfeits, including a double forfeit.
Alliance (11-3, 4-2) won six contested matches, including three by pin.
Parkar Utley, Duce Johnson and Jerrell Martin recorded pins for the Aviators. Coltyn Myler claimed a major decision. Oggy Ford, and Zach Rodgers prevailed by decisions. Devin Thompson was awarded a forfeit at 195.
In the opening match at 132 pounds, Ford overcame four-point deficit to secure a 7-6 decision. He snapped a 5-5 tie with a takedown with 29 seconds left in the third period.
Utley increased the Alliance lead to 9-0, earning a pin at 145. Utley seized control with a takedown 22 seconds into the match and recorded the fall nearly halfway through the first period.
Fritz scored the first team points for the Lions, recording a 3-1 decision at 145. In a match where both wrestlers spent the majority of time on their feet, Fritz recorded the lone takedown with seven seconds left in the third period.
Rodgers put the Aviators ahead 12-3 with a 6-1 decision at 152. He scored a takedown late in the first period to take the lead, then added another takedown with 1:10 remaining in the second period to build a cushion.
Scoring three near-fall points early in the third period of the 160-pound match, Jay Chaddock snapped a 3-3 tie and went on to post a 7-5 decision.
Myler, moved to a higher weight class, recorded seven takedowns and registered a 15-4 major decision at 170. Myler earned the team bonus point with his fifth takedown, making the score 11-3 at the 1:47 mark of the third period.
Johnson scored a takedown five seconds into the 182-pound match and parlayed that momentum into a first-period pin.
Bumping up to 220 pounds, Martin earned a quick pin, finishing the match in 13 seconds for a 34-6 lead. The Lions started a comeback in the 113-pound match with Luke Chaddock winning by a second-period pin.
After Minerva was awarded a forfeit at 120, Lucas made the final score closer, earning a 10-5 decision at 126. His takedown with 51 seconds left in the third quarter, extended a two-point lead to 8-4.
"They won a couple of key matches," Hilliard said. "Give credit to Oggy Ford winning at 132 and Zach Rodgers won a big match at 152, but we came out of this match good."
Minerva (4-4, 3-3) will travel to Carrollton today (Feb. 16), and to Beaver Local on Saturday, Feb. 18.
Minerva will compete in the Division II East Sectional Tournament at Claymont High School this Friday and Saturday, Feb. 24-25. Teams competing are Beaver, Cambridge, Claymont, East Liverpool, Indian Creek, Indian Valley, John Glenn, Maysville, Meadowbrook, New Philadelphia, Philo, River View and St. Clairsville.
The top four individuals in each weight class will advance to the district tournament at Heath High School March 3-4.
