Malvern dropped a pair of duals at a triangular held at Sandy Valley, losing to the hosts 42-6 and to Newcomerstown 18-12.
Braden Butcher picked up a pair of wins to lead the Hornets. Josh Gastin went 1-1.
"Going in, we knew it would be close with Newcomerstown," commented Head Coach Cameron Ruff. "They were able to beat us in the two toss-up matches to get the team win.
"Still, there were positives in some of the losses, especially with Tyler Banta. His last match against Newcomerstown he was pinned. This time he scored points and pushed the match all three periods. Andrew Norton earned two escape points against a state qualifier. Braden Butcher wrestled up two weight classes and still earned a win. That's improvement. That's what we're trying to do every day.
"Against Sandy Valley, we had to bump some of our lower weights up to heavier weight classes in order to have matches with them. Josh was winning 9-0 before his heavier opponent reached for Josh's head and was able to turn him into a head and arm for the win. It was a tough break, but once Josh gets back to wrestling guys in his weight class, he'll return to his winning form."
