Malvern will send three to this weekend's Division III District Wrestling Tournament.
Placing in the top four at the sectional tournament held at Sandy Valley were Tyler Banta at 106, Josh Gastin at 120, and Ricky Shundry at 170.
Banta (23-10) opened the tournament with a pin at 1:26 against Jake Mathews of Edison. In the semifinals, the freshman was pinned by Ridgewood's Colton Bethel at 1:32. Bethel would go on to win the title.
Sent to the consolation bracket, Banta recorded a 9-2 decision against Tusky Central's Matthew Mercier. Wrestling for third, Banta lost to Marshall Niswonger of Caldwell 14-3.
With only three wrestling in the 120-pound bracket, Gastin (19-8) was seeded first and was automatically placed in the finals, where he was pinned by Josh Kleiner of Edison at 4:31.
In the semifinals, Shundry was pinned by Grant Hershberger of Garaway at :46. With third place on the line, Shundry lost to Harrison Central's Tucker Coultrap by pin at 2:34.
Serving as a district alternate is Braden Butcher at 145. The junior beat Caldwell's Andrew Bjork in the fifth-place match.
"Four of our wrestlers placed, which is the most placers we've had at a sectional in several years," commented Head Coach Cameron Ruff. "Tyler, Josh, and Ricky are advancing on to districts next weekend at Coshocton and Braden will be joining us as well as an alternate.
"This is exciting for us. These guys get to represent Malvern at the district level. This will be a great and exciting experience for them.
"Josh advances to districts for the second year, as he gained valuable experience last year as a junior. Tyler and Ricky are freshman and will wrestle at districts on the varsity level for the first time."
The district tournament will be held Friday and Saturday, March 3-4, at Coshocton H.S. The top four in each weight class will qualify to the state tournament, on the OSU campus, March 9-11.
