Malvern has a wealth of experience back as it heads into the 2017 baseball season.
The Hornets return nine lettermen, including eight starters, and will once again be under the direction of Head Coach Matt Chiurco.
Back are seniors Jaret Majestic (outfield, shortstop, pitcher) and Hunter Mullins (second base); juniors Drew Hutchison (shortstop, pitcher), Jake Foster (outfield, pitcher), Gavyn Potts (third base, pitcher), Jake Moser (utility, pitcher) and Austin Patterson (outfield, pitcher); and sophomores Alex Skinner (catcher) and Chase Meyer (infield, pitcher).
Also being looked upon to contribute are senior Jordan Browning (first base, pitcher); junior Jake Hawley (first base); and freshmen Jaden Goldsworthy (infield, pitcher) and Dakota Delong (outfield).
Coach Chiurco projects his starting lineup to consist of Hawley or Browning at first, Mullins at second, Potts at third, Hutchison at short, Skinner behind the plate, and an outfield consisting of Foster, Patterson and Moser.
The pitching rotation consists of Majestic, Hutchison, Potts and Myer, with Patterson coming on in relief.
"We have a veteran group with a lot of guys who are going to be third or four-year starters," stated Coach Chiurco. "We have good team speed and are sound on defense. Our top three in the lineup (Majestic, Hutchison, Foster) should set the tone. We hoping success breeds success and we can feed off the boys basketball team's sweet 16 run.
"With our numbers low, we lack depth at all positions. With the new rules on pitch count, we've had to develop some new pitchers. We really struggled hitting last year with runs coming at a premium. We don't want to repeat that.
"There were times last year that we played very well against some very good teams (Hiland, Toronto), but we just didn't have enough. If we can become a consistent team on a daily basis, we're going to have a chance to win our fair share of games.
"We really need all of our upper classmen to have good years for us to make it a reality.
"The IVC will be as good as always. Hiland is the Division III state champs. Strasburg, Ridgewood, Garaway, Sandy Valley and Tusky Central all have good teams as well. It will be a grind day in and day out. If we were to finish in the middle of the pack, I would say we had an extremely successful season."
Coach Chiurco's staff consists of Lance Gram, Klint Ferrell, Ted Majestic and Frank Chiurco.
Malvern will open up the season this Monday, March 27, when it travels to Tusky Central. The boys will host Conotton Valley on Tuesday, March 28; and Sandy Valley on Wednesday, March 29.
