Lacking in experience, the Malvern girls track team will rely heavily on its four returning letter winners as it heads into the 2017 season.

Back for the Lady Hornets are junior Kelsi Hulit and sophomores Julianna Lambert, Kendra Kuhn and Gabby Lawrence.

Hulit had a phenomenal sophomore campaign. She won the IVC Championship in the discus and place second in the shot; finished second in the discus at the district meet, and was third in the discus at the regional meet. She competed at the state championships in the discus, placing ninth.

Lambert will compete in the 800 and 1600; Kuhn in the long jump, 400 and 800; and Lawrence in the shot, discus, 200 and 400.

Also being looked upon to contribute are juniors Hannah Bower (100, 200, relays, long jump) and Matalie Custer (400, 800, relays, field events); sophomore Breawna Gillogly (1600, 3200, relays); and freshman Zoe Moser (100, 200, relays, long jump), Lauren Foster (400, 800, relays, field events), Maggie Champer (shot, discus), Vanessa Stanbro (100, 200, relays, field events), Makayla Bowe (shot, discus), Kara Lawrence (800, 1600, 3200) and Laura Rogers (800, 1600, 3200, relays).

"We are very optimist about the upcoming season," stated Head Coach Jeremy Maher. "We look for Kelsi to lead our team with her experience from the state meet a year ago. We have several freshmen that we hope can contribute to the team and have added a few athletic upperclassmen who had not participated previously.

"We look to get as many girls to the state meet and be more competitive in league meets."

This past Saturday, Malvern opened the season with a seventh-place showing at the Claymont Jeff Arthurs Invitational.

Kelsi Hulit picked up right where she left off a season ago, winning the discus with a throw of 122'5 and placing second in the shot with a heave of 35'9.5.

Zoe Moser started her freshman season with a bang, winning the 100 with a time of 12.59. She also placed fourth in the 200 in 29.27. In the prelims, Moser set the school record in the 100 with a time of 12.38.

"We are very excited to have our first meet completed," stated Coach Maher. "We are a very young team and showed that we will be competitive this year. Our junior leader, Kelsi Hulit, did an amazing job scoring 18 points and lettering in her first meet of the year. Her discus throw was only three feet away from the meet record.

"Zoe Moser had a outstanding day and broke the 100 meter school record. She also lettered in her first high school meet by scoring 16 points.

Lauren Foster and Laura Rodgers also had great days and narrowly missed scoring points in their first high-school meet.

"We look forward to improving heading into our next meet at Fairless."

The Lady Hornets will compete in the Fairless Invitational this Saturday, April 1; and at a triangular at Strasburg, with Garaway, on Tuesday, April 4.
