YMCA education program highlights importance of diabetes self-management

Published:

The Carroll County YMCA has concluded its successful 10-week Activate American Diabetes Self-Management Education Program and is gearing up for a second class.

The class, which had 19 participants this session, was free to participants with Type 1, Type 2, pre-diabetes and gestational diabetes thanks to a grant through the State of Ohio /Ohio Department of Health Office of Healthy Ohio. The one-hour classes were designed to bring awareness and education to the participants and teach them self-management skills.

Coordinated by Carroll County YMCA Health and Wellness Director Carol Myers, participants received information on risk factors, using a glucose meter, understanding the effects of diabetes on the whole body, fitness, nutrition, meal planning and maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Susan Morris, a certified diabetes educator and registered dietitian, will lead sessions on diabetes education, while Myers and YMCA personal trainer Tyler Haugh discussed fitness and exercise.

Participants with Type 1, Type 2, pre-diabetes or gestational diabetes must have a referral form signed by their physician. Referral forms are available at the Carroll County YMCA, 211 Moody Ave., S.W., Carrollton and the Carroll County Health Department, 301 Moody Ave., S.W., Carrollton.

Registrations are being accepted now for the September program, which is almost filled, as well as a program that will be held in 2011. There is a limit of 20 participants per class.

Participants will be required to attend an educational session at the YMCA one evening per week. Sessions will last about an hour. Participants will also be required to keep a daily activity log and food journal.

They will be given a personalized workout schedule designed by the YMCA, which may include group exercising. Upon completion, the YMCA will offer a six-month complimentary membership to their facility.

For more information, please contact Carol Myers at the Carroll County YMCA, 330-627-9622.
