1998 Nicole King and Addessa Crawford, juniors at Minerva High School, helped third-grader Andrew Burman with chemical testing. King and Crawford work with the STARS program at Mary Irene Day, assisting the elementary teachers with various projects. The two assisted with a science unit devoted to chemical testing. The two helped students as they heated five unknown chemicals to see the results. Katie Spehar set a school record in the 3200 with a time of 12:33.7. She broke the previous record of 12:51.2 set by Kelly Tice in 1986. Spehar entered seven events last week and won them all. 1988 Eleven students from developmentally handicapped classes attended the Special Olympics from Malvern. They were Tanya Bernardi, Kenny Campbell, Amy Williams, Emmy Crater, Shannon Shank, Margaret Baker, Charlea Mayle, Brian Hupp, Joe Simmons, Lisa Bernardi and Tony Nichols. Holly Garee McCully graduated from Mount St. Joseph College in Cincinnati with a master's degree in elementary education. She is a graduate of Minerva High School and Malone College in Canton. She has been a kindergarten teacher at Mary Irene Day for 10 years and is now teaching at Minerva and Robertsville. 1978 An era stretching over 33 years came to an end this past week when Dale George, Minerva's fire chief the last 32 years, officially retired. He remembered that when he took over the chief's reins, "We started slow and gradually built up steam into the best volunteer fire department around." Ray Willett was named as the new fire chief. There were 14 Malvern students who graduated from the Carrollton Head Start program. They are Dee Dee Haas, Robert Adams, Dana Cross, Anna Lanctot, Susan Geiser, Julie Gross, Matthew Uplinger, Kim Haas, Jennifer Holland, Brian Kinback, Buddy Green, Amber Dennis, Jennifer Gross and Dennis Reese. 1968 The Kopper Kettle restaurant in Malvern is under new management as of April, and is being operated by Mr. and Mrs. Charles Reneker, of New Philadelphia. Phillip Grogg, 11, last Sunday was named winner, having built the largest kite. Phillip reports that he used all of his 1,200 feet of string to fly high. 1958 Mrs. Richard Walker was chosen "Mrs. Minerva" in the recent "Mrs. America" Ohio Fuel Gas Co., contest. Due to Mrs. Walker having the measles, she was unable to participate in the district contest. Twelve contestants from this area filled out a lengthy blank, wrote an essay and submitted a picture with their entry. The winner was chosen on homemaking ability, poise, personality and appearance. She was presented with a large square aluminum skillet from Ohio Fuel Gas Co. on the day she took the measles. Mrs. Mary Ellen DeLuca has announced the purchase of Shaw's Baby Bar, located at 206 N. Main St. The new owner purchased the business from Mrs. Nella Shaw, who has owned the business since January 1950. Mrs. DeLuca has been assisting in the operation of the business due to the illness of Mrs. Shaw. Mrs. DeLuca purchased the fixtures and stock and has moved to a new location at 226 N. Market St., next to Hart's Drug Store. 1948 Gov. Thomas J. Herbert has proclaimed Sunday, May 9, as Mother's Day, and he urged all Ohioans to "pause to honor our mothers" on that day. Two Minerva High School students received ratings of "superior" for their instrumental solos played at the state solo and ensemble finals. Miss Jean Burrows, a senior, received her high rating for playing, "The Duchess" as a tenor saxophone solo. Charles Toalston, MHS freshman, was rated "superior" for his drum solo, "Downfall of Paris." Both are pupils of Miss Beulah Robart. A three-lens type of signal face traffic light was installed at the intersection of the Lincoln Highway and N. Market St. by electricians of the Municipal Power and Light plant on Tuesday. This "stop" light, is red at the top, yellow in the center and green at the bottom. 1938 Minerva soon will have a new roller rink. It will be located at Guthries Hall and will be under the management of Howard D. Brown, Roy G. Wickersham and Bert Guthrie. Comments
