CANTON - Mercy Medical Center will host a bone marrow donor registry day from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 14, at Mercy Medical Center in the Cancer Center Atrium and at Mercy Health Center of Jackson/Massillon. Become part of the National Marrow Donor Program Registry and you will join a movement of more than 10 million donors ready to save lives. When you stop by a Mercy donor location on May 14, you'll be asked to complete a registration form, health history and sign an agreement to join the Registry. You'll also provide a swab of your cheek cells at no cost to you. For more information about bone marrow donation, call Mercy Cancer Center at 330-430-2788. On any given day, more than 6,000 people with leukemia, lymphoma and many other diseases are searching for a life-saving bone marrow donor. Only three out of every 10 patients will receive the marrow transplant that could save their life. Donors with diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially needed. Nine-year-old Zachary Holshu knows the importance of the NMDP. In April 2006, Zachary was diagnosed with leukemia. By August, a matching donor was found in the NMDP Registry. Now a fourth grader at Walker Elementary School in Canton, Zachary is enjoying activities with his peers such as playing youth football and little league baseball.
