Deputy Kenneth Yost is shown wearing his safety belt. It is policy of the sheriff’s office and state law to wear seatbelts.

This upcoming Memorial Day weekend, the Carroll County Sheriff's Office has announced that deputies will be out in high volume. Deputies will be enforcing the zero tolerance of safety- belt enforcement from May 18 - June 1.

This year during the campaign period, law enforcement will adopt a zero tolerance policy to those not buckling up. Wearing a seat belt is a state law. Law-enforcement officers in Ohio must first suspect another violation before issuing a traffic citation for not wearing a safety belt. Those who fail to buckle up in Carroll County, will be issued a ticket that carries a fine of $58 for the driver and $48 for each passenger.

The goal of the Click it or Ticket campaign is to educate the public on seat-belt usage and to reduce traffic fatalities. Motor-vehicle crashes continue to be a leading factor of deaths in the United States.

A properly worn seatbelt means with both straps snugly fitted to transfer the impact of the collision to the parts of your body that can take it - your hipbones and shoulder bones. With just the shoulder strap on, you can still slide out from under it and be strangled, while the lap belt alone does not keep your face from hitting the steering wheel.

Deputies encourage all drivers and passengers in the front seat to wear the lap and shoulder belt. Rear seat passengers are encouraged wearing their seat belt as well.

Ohio's child-passenger safety law requires for children less than four years of age and less than 40 pounds to be buckled into a child-restraint seat in the rear seat of the car, facing the rear window. Check your seat belts and child restraints before beginning your travels.
