Minerva High School seniors Alex Doak and Melanie Kast recently won awards at two area art shows.

Doak earned honorable mention for his sculpture, "Molten Metal," at the 17th annual Stark County Student Art Exhibition at the Canton Museum of Art. Doak's work placed in the top 10 percent of approximately 180 pieces entered in the competition and was displayed at the museum.

He is the first Minerva student to receive an award at the exhibition in its 17-year history.

Doak also received first place for his construction-paper sculpture, "Yee Haw," and Kast received second place for her painting, "Piggy," in the Carroll County Commission for the Advancement of the Arts Student Art Show.

They competed against students from throughout Carroll County.
