1998

Linda Somerville recently was awarded the Pastor of the Year Award from the lay ministers in the Steubenville District of United Methodist Churches. She serves the Pleasant Grove United Methodist Church and the Mount Zion United Methodist Church. Somerville is humble. She points out quickly that she did not earn the award, the congregations did.

Meg and Jonathan Walters, of Lake Mohawk, recently donated $5,000 to the Carroll County Commission for the Advancement of the Arts. Jonathan Walters is vice president of Kopp Clay Company in Malvern. Meg Walters is the owner/operator of Henri's Bridal Shoppe in Minerva. The money will be used for the renovation of the old Rutan and McCully feed store on Main Street in Carrollton, built in 1892 and donated to the CCCAA.

1988

Construction of the new First Baptist Church got under way, after delays due to a problem with the deed and other paperwork. The building is to be finished Sept. 1 and is being constructed by R.P. Babik Construction of Canton at a cost of $220,000. Some volunteer work by members of the congregation is also being utilized.

Lenore Binnig received Honorable Mention in a recent World of Poetry contest. Mrs. Binnig's poem was entitled "Uni-Sex?" and she received an Award of Merit certificate. She says inspiration for the title came from observing a mother and son sitting in the pew in front of her at church with identical haircuts.

1978

The Minerva PTO presented to Mary Irene Day Elementary School a record player and a cassette recorder-player, purchased by Campbell Soup labels that had been taken to school by students, to be used for the purchase. They were presented to Principal Baliff Jenkins by Mrs. Alfred Rhiel, Minerva PTO vice president and Mrs. Ray Becker, PTO president.

James Rohrer, of Malvern, a 1978 graduating senior of St. John's Central Catholic High School, has been announced as top student in the state, regardless of school size, in the area of social studies. He led the top 1 percent of Ohio students, numbering 1,195 who entered tests in social studies this year. The social-studies team from St. John's placed in the state in Division III Schools with fewer than 399 students.

1968

Mrs. Kenneth Speakman, of New Franklin, showed her German Shepherd dog, Fritz, at the Canton show on May 5. Fritz scored 192 out of a possible 200 points, which counts one leg toward CD degree.

Miss Sherilyn Cogan, of East Rochester, was the recipient of a $1,000 scholarship. It was presented by the Women's Board of St. Luke's Hospital during the graduation ceremonies. Miss Cogan will enter West Virginia University in the fall to complete the requirements for a bachelor of science in nursing.

1958

Five students won distinction in the Final District State Scholarship Tests at Akron University. Gene Desmond, a senior, placed 20th in physics. Those receiving honorable mention were Robert Lawther, a junior, in algebra II; James Hetrick, a sophomore, plane geometry; Judy Kurfiss, a sophomore, English X; and Paul Binnig, a freshman, English IX.

Miss Barbara Poll graduated from Cincinnati Bible Seminary. She has accepted a position as church secretary at the Lockland Christian Church.

1948

The valedictory address at the Augusta High School graduation will be given by David Oyer, of Kensington. Jean Carle, of Hanoverton, will give the salutatory speech. Mr. Oyer will speak on "Self-Education." Augusta will graduate 36 seniors.

Sandra Simmons, of Minerva, has just been awarded a Certificate of Merit and a Junior Membership in The Holstein-Friesian Association of America. This recognition is for doing satisfactory Holstein Calf Club work as a 4-H member.

1938

Today (Thursday) was a great day in the history of the Minerva postal department. Carrying more than 100 special air-mail letters, a few newspapers and small packages, a mail plane left the Sherman Unkefer field shortly after noon today, bound for Cleveland with the first air-mail delivery direct from Minerva.

This flight is being made during National Air Mail Week (May 15-21) to celebrate the 20th anniversary of the inauguration of air-mail service.
