Malvern Middle School sixth-grade students prepared for a trip to Camp Muskingum at the end of May by participating in a boating-safety class given by the Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Watercraft.

Officer Hobart (from left) from the ODNR Division of Watercraft gives a boating-safety demonstration with sixth graders Kyle Moeglin and Madison Mottice.

Students tried on life jackets and walked through the safest way to enter and exit a canoe. They were also given information on the importance of safe boating.

Hobart showed examples of personal floatation devices needed for different types of water activities. Students also learned the importance of having Coast Guard-approved life jackets for each person on the boat.
