Athena Spinell has accomplished a rare feat at Minerva - earning 12 varsity letters during her four-year career.

The three-sport star has received four letters in softball, three in basketball, three in competition cheerleading and two in varsity cheerleading.

She has received the NBC Scholar/Athlete Award twice and the Minerva Scholar/Athlete award five times.

Her team accomplishments in cheerleading include four all-around league titles, four competition league titles, two state championships in cheer, three state championships in dance and a runners-up finish at nationals.

Individually, she finished first and third at the prestigious Ohio State University Competition.

In basketball, she received the silver certificate in 2007 and was named to the honorable mention squads for the NBC and Stark County. The point guard led the Lady Lions to a district title in 2006 and a district runners-up trophy in 2007.

Spinell anchors the softball team's defense from her center-field position and was an integral member of the 2006 district championship team.

She recently was honored with the NEOIAAA Don Nelson Scholarship Award, along with a $1,000 check toward her college education.

Spinell is the daughter of Don and Denise Spinell. She will attend Ohio University and major in middle-school education, and participate in Ohio University's cheerleading tryouts May 16-18.
