Mark Bowen of Ellet has spent the last several years trying to teach teens from his mistakes. He has spoken at several areas schools, warning students of the dangers of drugs and alcohol. With these vices He has had plenty experience. Now, as he is diagnosed with stage-four non-small cell lung cancer, he is still trying to teach others. Knowing his mother had died from lung cancer, he asked for a physical, requesting a chest X-ray, which was refused. He encourages everyone to be their own advocate. He believes his diagnosis would have come a year earlier had he paid for the X-ray himself. Bowen, 46, is currently under treatment as he strives to enter remission from this fatal disease. He has been given one to three years to live. A fundraiser will be held Monday, June 30, at Arlington Avenue Church of God, 142 Arlington Ave., Canton, at 7 p.m. There will be singing and refreshments sold. A fund has been set up in Bowen's name at Chase Bank. Donations may be made at any branch by seeing the bank manager. Donations may also be mailed to Arlington Avenue Church of God. Bowen said the money will be used to assist his wife, his two children and two step-children after he is gone. For more information, see Bowen's Web site, markbowenfund.athost.net. Comments
