NEW PHILADELPHIA -- Crossroads Resource Conservation and Development Council Inc., along with numerous partners are offering a program for residents of Mahoning County who are interested in becoming new beekeepers.
A limited number of $500 scholarships are available for organizations or individuals working with youth in Youngstown, Greenford Township, and throughout Mahoning County. The youth participant must be between 14 and 18 years of age and attend classes with the adult participant.
The beekeeping program includes classroom instruction, bees, and the equipment necessary to begin beekeeping.
Applications are available online at www.crossroadsrcd.org or by calling 330-339-9317. Applications may also be picked up at the Mahoning OSU Extension or the Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District Offices. The deadline for program signup is Jan. 29.
In addition to the classroom instruction, bees and equipment, the adult participant will receive a one-year subscription to "Bee Culture" magazine, two unconstructed hives, training at a field day and be provided a mentor who is an experienced beekeeper.
The purpose of the program is to increase the number of beekeepers in Mahoning County, increase productivity of gardens and encourage beekeeping among 14-18 year olds.
Funding for the program is provided by the following sponsors: Natural Resource Conservation Service, the Raymond John Wean Foundation, the Mahoning County Farm Bureau, the Greenford Ruritans, The Ohio State Beekeepers Association, and The Ohio State University Extension of Mahoning County. Additional partners in the project include: The Columbiana Mahoning Beekeepers and the Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District.
