Canton Local Superintendent Teresa Purses informed the Canton Local Board of Education on Feb. 23 she plans to step down from the position of superintendent at the end of the 2010 school year.

Purses served as West Elementary principal from 1994-98.

Purses said, "It has been a great honor to serve as superintendent at Canton Local Schools for the past eight years, but given my health concerns of the last six months, I have decided that it is time for me to pass the privilege and responsibility of the position of superintendent to a new leader."

Board President Scott Hamilton said, "I want to take this opportunity to thank Mrs. Purses for her outstanding leadership during the past 12 years as both superintendent and curriculum director. We truly have been blessed to have her directing our school system. I would also like to announce that the Canton Local Board of Education has interviewed and selected Mrs. Kim Redmond to serve as the next Canton Local Superintendent. Canton Local is very fortunate to have such a talented and experienced administrator already on our team. We look forward to her continuing our focus towards excellence in her new role."

After hearing the board's decision, Purses said, "I fully support the board's decision to hire Mrs. Redmond as the next superintendent. She is a visionary leader with a great passion to help every student succeed. She will continue Canton Local's tradition of commitment to excellence in all aspects of our school district."

The board and Redmond have asked Purses to serve as curriculum director for next year.
