2000 Minerva Elder Care announces the winner of the raffle recently sold. Shirla Waller of Minerva, is the winner of the two tickets for a Niagara Falls, Canada, vacation. The tickets for the weekend trip include two dinners and four breakfasts for two, a bottle of champagne and a paid room. Transportation must be paid by the winner. Tickets were sold by Minerva Elder Care in an effort to raise money for the residents' general fund. Four hundred tickets were sold, raising $400 for those at the facility. Pat Moreno, who sold the winning tickets, presented them to Shirla Waller. Kelli Mohr of Malvern was recently named the Groundhog Day Queen, at St. James Catholic School. She is a first-grader who earned the honor by winning a contest. There were no reports whether Kelli made any predictions about how long winter will last. 1990 Patrolman Jim Blackburn has won this year's "Officer of the Year Award". The award was presented at the Minerva Rotary Banquet. He has worked as a full-time patrolman since Sept. 10, 1988, spent eight years as an auxiliary policeman, and worked as a Ford Motor Company employee. He was selected for this award because of his dedication, and the outstanding effort he has made in his work. An open house at the newly built Malvern Post Office is set for Sunday. Tours of the facility will be conducted, and refreshments will be served. The first post office in the community was established as Brown Post Office, a fourth-class facility, in February 1828. Malvern's is the oldest post office in Carroll County. 1980 Spelling-bee winners from the Minerva Local School District are: Denise Nichols, first place; Brian Harrell, first runner-up; Mary Betz, second runner-up; Douglas Haubert, third runner-up; and Kevin Milliken as alternate. Ten Malvern High School students are participating in the third annual Talented Youth Seminars. Selection for the program is based on scholastic achievement, teacher recommendation, interest, creative thinking and leadership. The students are Pam Columbo, Vicki Bower, Patti Nichols, George Snode, Kim Woodall, Cindy Duffy, Marvin McConnell, Sandy Smith, Vaughn Slabaugh and Dave Sarachene. They will explore the subjects of lasers, aviation, computers, research and medicine. They will visit Wright-Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton, Battelle Institute in Columbus, Computer Graphics at Muskingum College and Buehl Planetarium in Pittsburgh, to achieve their goals. 1970 Rev. Donald C. Meese, 1960 graduate of Minerva High School, is pastor of Riverview Bible Church, at Bellaire. He graduated from Baptist Bible College, where he served for two and a half years following graduation, as associate pastor and youth director of the Bellview Baptist Church. While a student at Minerva High School, he was a member of the National Honor Society for two years, and president of his senior class. Mrs. Eugene Marquis was recently honored as a 15-year employee of the General Telephone Company of Ohio. She is employed in the traffic department. She is also a 4-H club advisor and a Girl Scout leader. 1960 Miss Mary Irene Day, principal of Minerva Grade School the past 34 years, has been selected Minerva's "Woman of the Year," by a committee from the Minerva Women's Club. A teacher in the grade school before taking the principal position, she attended Muskingum College and graduated from Kent State University with a bachelor of science degree in education. A new type of retail family shoe store is being opened at 106 North Market St. in Minerva. It is unique in this area in the fact that it will be a semi-self-serve store, with a large selection of shoes for the entire family, to be offered at discount prices. The new store will be named R & R Discount Shoes, and will be managed by Don Hillyer, who is well-known around Minerva, for having been associated in various retail establishments for the past 17 years. 1950 Minerva Band Boosters have purchased a new tuba for the high-school band. The instrument was used for the first time in the annual band show. The instrument cost was $320. This was taken from the $1,000 received from the community chest fund. Clarence J. Deckman, clerk of the Board of Public Affairs of the village of Malvern, announced an increase of 75 cents per quarter, in the water rate charged to Malvern customers. The board increased the rate from $2.75 per quarter to $3.50 to meet the cost of expansion and extensive service, and improvements of and to the supply and condition of the village's water. 1940 Motion pictures of the famous World Championship 15-round Fight between Joe Louis, title-holder, and Arturo Godoy, South American heavyweight, will be shown at the Roxy Theater, as an added attraction. Miss Beulah Robart, well-known Minerva musician, has announced that she will give saxophone, clarinet and flute lessons at her home at 406 North Main St. For many years, Miss Robart played for silent pictures, and was soloist for the Pantageon Vaudeville Circuit. She has played in almost every state in the union. In her tour around the world, Miss Robart has been featured before nobility. She was in Europe for seven and a half years. Comments
