Wilma Strachan

Wilma Strachan, 91, of Minerva, died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, in Minerva Eldercare.

She was born June 19, 1918, in Alliance to Harvey and Dora (Yeagley) Betz. She retired from Minerva Local Schools after 28 years as a fifth-grade school teacher and Title One reading instructor at M.I. Day Elementary. She was a 1936 graduate of Minerva High School and received her bachelor's degree in education from Kent State University. She was a member of the Minerva First Presbyterian Church, the DAR and the Ohio Retired Teachers Association. She was an avid golfer and quilter.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Stanley Strachan, who died in 1985; two sons-in-law, John Stryffeler and Harvey Tullis; a sister, Ruth Edwards; and a brother, Donald Betz. She is survived by three daughters, Nancy Stryffeler of Salem, Wilma Jean (Oliver) Roberts of Minerva, and Sherilyn (Raymond) Woods of Cocoa, Fla.; four grandchildren, Andy (Trina) Woods, Anita (James) Hawkins, Kevin (Kristy) Tullis and Stephanie (Michael) Woods-Black; and five great-grandchildren, Alexis Woods, Parker Hawkins, Kelsie Tullis, Kolby Tullis and Alaina Hawkins.

The family would like to thank her wonderful caregivers for all of their loving care throughout her illness, Jane Scott, Linda Bucher, Darlene Escott, Janet Hodge and all of the special caregivers at Minerva Eldercare.

Funeral services were held Sunday, March 7, in the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva with the Rev. Barbara Bartholomew officiating. Burial was in East Lawn Cemetery. A DAR service was held during the calling hours Saturday.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Minerva First Presbyterian Church.
