1998

For the fourth consecutive year, students at West Elementary recently participated in the St. Jude Math-a-thon. This year they surpassed their previous records by raising more than $3,232 for St. Jude Hospital for Children. Raising over $300 was Josh Toussant, second place was Ashley Snively, and third was Donald Ickes.

Brownie Troop 353 recent spent a camp-in at McKinley Museum in Canton. The members were treated to a pizza party, learned how to find constellations in the sky, and enjoyed hands-on activities at the Discovery Zone. They spent the night sleeping under a dinosaur.

1988

Malvern Hornet senior Dawn Masters was named the Most Valuable Player for the West team when the District 5 East-West All Star Game was held. Masters scored 10 points and recorded seven rebounds and two steals during the recognition game to place West in their 64-58 win over the East team. Also honored was Hornet senior Tiffany Brown, who received special mention, and Heather Tucci, who received honorable mention.

Kishman's IGA is planning a 6,000-foot expansion to the store at 202 E. High St. Operator Tom Kishman said in the works, beginning with the outside parking area, is expansion toward Route 30 and parking entrance and exit from Route 30. On the inside there will be expansion in most departments, plus the addition of some new departments. The outside appearance of the supermarket will undergo some change too as the entranceway will be moved north toward the middle of the building.

1978

A total of $5,385.80 in Easter candy was sold by the Robertsville Elementary School students. This was a profit to the school of $2,154.32 to be used for necessary items that will be of assistance to the children's education. Award winners were Jason Myers, Kim Rarric, Thane Dourm, Heather Blackburn, Daryl Shirley, Scott Walter, Todd Betz, Sharon Thorton, Chris Speakman, Gary Chaddock, Tom Yacklin, Barney Carson, Cheryl Preston, Michael Lautzenheiser, Steve Smith and Pam Hefler.

Hornet basketball award winners are Brad Strock, who earned an Honorable Mention in the Eastern District; Dennie Tucci, Honorable Mention IVC Inter-Valley Conference; Jim McDermott, who was named to the IVC first team, the Eastern District second team, and received an All Ohio Honorable Mention.

1968

Easter Lillies, painted by Mrs. Leroy Weikart, is the painting hanging this month in the lobby of Minerva National Bank. Mrs. Weikart studies with Mrs. Williard K. Smith.

1958

Germain Germain, formerly of Jamestown, N.Y. and for the past three years in Steubenville, has taken over resident managership of the Roxy Theatre. He has more than 35 years in show business. W.E. Gross, former resident manager, returns Sunday as manager of the Skyway Drive-In theatre at the "Y" near Malvern.

Arthur B. Kail, owner of Minerva Hardware, announced recently the purchase of the Robert Watson business building, formerly known as the H.H. Hart building, located at 220-222 N. Market St., next to their current location in the Calerdine building. The building is occupied by two business establishments, Minerva Auto Supply and The Odd Penny Department Store. Mr. Kail said they plan to move the hardware store into the building at a later date.

1948

Jean Burrows, senior, and Charles Toalston, freshman, won superior ratings in the Solo and Ensemble Festival at Baldwin-Wallace College. Lottie Lou Lippincott, senior, received a rating of excellent. Jean and Lottie played tenor and alto saxophones, respectively. Charles played a snare drum solo.

Capturing first place on the MHS honor roll are seven junior girls. They are Ruth Ann Byers, Doris Crowl, Ruth Ann Wallace, Betty Miller, Shirley Grunder, LaVaughan Hause and Martha Hawkins. Second honors go to the freshman class, which is represented by Catherine Estep, Joan Brown, Glenna Wagner, Ruth Ann Wallace, Nancy Patmore, Lucille Morrison and Paul Davis, the only boy on the honor roll. Close behind, with five girls., is the senior class Joe Bee Ringle, Gloria Jean Reed, June Crawford, Bessie Coon and Virginia Dager. Sophomores have only one person on the honor roll, Irene Dickey.
