1998

Minerva High School student Brent McPherson and Regan Stocker will travel to Fort Worth, Texas, to represent district 13 at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair. The project that earned them this award is aptly named "Project 56K," an in-depth research project that studies and evaluates the transfer rate of high-speed 56K modems that connect computers with the Internet. The two spent 152 hours collecting data and information, proving 56K modems do not run at their stated speeds for various reasons. They were also awarded first place Diebold Science and Engineering Award, the Army Science and Engineering Award, the Navy Science and Engineering Award, and an invitation to the State Science Fair held at Ohio Wesleyan.

Former Malvern resident Blanche Motts will be inducted into Ohio's Senior Citizens Hall of Fame. Motts, 87, has produced a myriad of accomplishments that have affected senior citizens in the Stark County area. She is credited with gaining corporate sponsorship for the Senior Olympic games, establishing the Canton Senior Boutique and was director of senior programs at the Canton YMCA for 22 years.

1988

Malvern High School graduate of 1964 Saundra Romano received a plaque and certificate from the Diocese of Youngstown, Department of Education in recognition for 16 years of service in the parochial school system. Altogether, she has been teaching for 20 years, four of which were in the public school system. She taught English at Malvern High School for two years and also founded the kindergarten program at St. James Catholic School .

A dinner honored Gerry Kopp, who has retired following 22 years of service to Minerva Red Cross bloodmobile. Laberta Shotwell was also recognized for 20 years of work in the bloodmobile canteens. Mrs. Kopp was responsible for organizing the bloodmobiles held in Minerva, and during that time each bloodmobile became more successful. She was presented a plaque for her years of service.

1978

On the evening of April 2, Steve Swanciger, Jerry Glick and Dan Swanciger, who had been fishing at Lake Mohawk all day long, caught the fish of their dreams when they landed a three foot, 11-pound Northern Pike in the creek outside the dam. Jerry and Steve were quick to retrieve the fish when Dan first caught it, but then lost it. "Pete Pike," as the boys affectionately named their catch, is to be stuffed and mounted.

1968

The Lincoln Way Barber Shop (located in the Fry Shopping Center) has been purchased by Dale Gallaher, of Bergholz, from the former owner, Joseph Miller, who will continue to work in the shop. Mr. Gallaher is a native of Carrollton and resides in Bergholz.

On display in the lobby of The Minerva Banking Co. are 26 apple peelers from the collection of Arthur Nagey. Nagey started to collect apple peelers (or apple parers as they were originally called) in 1928. The oldest one in his collection was made 116 years ago and the latest date he has is 1898. They will be given to the Minerva Historical Society after being on display.

1958

Hart's Hill on North Market Street will be the scene about Sunday of a beautiful sight of more than 100,000 daffodils in full bloom. Postmaster Charles A. Hart stated that he helped his father, the late H.H. Hart, plant the first bulbs more than 40 years ago. There are more than 50 varieties scattered over three acres. Each year Mr. Hart plants more bulbs and always adds some new varieties. The large M.H.S. outlined in daffodils always attracts a lot of attention.

1948

Howard Russell, with his father and brother W.E. and Francis Russell, became the new owner of the Kryder building in which their jewelry store and the A&P Store are located. For the past eight years, Russell's Jewelry store has been located in the Kryder Building. The former owner, W.G. Kryder, maintains his office in the basement.

Mr. and Mrs. Foster Brown, of West Line Street, have taken over the ownership of Bate's Flower Shop, located at 105 W. Line St. The shop had been owned and operated by Mrs. Russell Bates for the past two years. Mr. and Mrs. Brown plan to operate the business under the original name. Mrs. Brown has been assisting the former owner for several months.
