Malvern's Zak Kapron has signed a letter of intent to play basketball at Ohio Dominican University.
The 6'6 standout post player (center) is flanked by his parents, Jeff and Dorie Kapron. Standing are ODU Assistant Coach Mike Cavey, ODU Head Coach Artie Taylor, and Malvern Head Coach Dennis Tucci.
"I like the fact Ohio Dominican is a small college located in a big city (Columbus)," commented Kapron. "I also like the fact they are going to be moving up to Division II in a couple of years. They are expanding their rec center and the basketball program is taking off under Head Coach Artie Taylor."
This past season, Kapron led the Hornets in scoring and rebounding, averaging 21 points and 11 boards per contest.
He was selected to the first team All-Ohio, first team All-IVC, first team AP Eastern District and first team District V.
He was named player of the year for the AP Eastern District and District V.
Malvern won its first-ever Inter-Valley Conference championship during Kapron's senior year, finishing the regular season undefeated at 20-0. The Hornets saw their season end with a loss in the regional finals, finishing up with a school-record 25-1 mark.
Kapron was one of three players to reach the 1,000-point plateau this past season. He leaves Malvern having scored 1,221 points.
"Zak has really improved from the time we got him as a sophomore," commented Coach Tucci. "He has more to do with that than any of us. He's really improved his game and his work ethic. He's made himself into a bonafide college basketball player.
"Ohio Dominican is a good fit for Zak. They have lost a couple of big guys, which will give Zak an opportunity to play right away. They are in a great conference with Walsh, Malone, Rio Grande and Mount Vernon. He has some relatives in Columbus and it was important for him to get to a big city. I'm looking forward to seeing how this plays out for him."
Ohio Dominican posted a 19-11 record in Coach Taylor's first year at the helm, reaching the conference semifinals.
"We are excited to have such a talented player like Zak," stated Coach Taylor. "Zak brings a high level of toughness with the ability to operate smoothly around the basket. We look forward to working with Zak for the next four years."
