Esther Ruth Wadsworth Stiles Pocobello, 88, of Madison, Ind., passed away Friday, Nov. 23, 2012, at the Jewel House in Madison.
Esther was born March 20, 1924 in Malvern, to Louis and Sadie (Wilson) Wadsworth.
Esther was raised by her uncle and aunt, Arthur and Ethel Wadsworth. She was a 1942 graduate of Malvern High School. She had attended the Ohio State University and was a graduate of the Aultman Hospital School of Nursing in Canton. She served in the Cadet Nurse Corps during World War II. She was united in marriage in 1957 to Dr. William Stiles. This union was blessed with one daughter, Linda.
Esther had worked as a registered nurse in surgery at New York Presbyterian Hospital in New York City. She had served as director of nurses at King's Daughters' Hospital in Madison and also as a surgical nurse. Esther retired from King's Daughter's Hospital on Aug. 1, 1992, after 30 years of service. She was united in marriage to Michael Pocobello on Oct. 6, 1978. She had co-owned with Mike, the Famous Bello's Pizza in downtown Madison for many years. Esther was a member of the Resurrection Lutheran Church in Madison.
She enjoyed sewing, caring for animals, gardening, and her grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her parents, Louis and Sadie Wilson Wadsworth; her aunt and uncle, Arthur and Ethel Wadsworth; her husbands, Dr. William Stiles, who died in 1966; and Michael Pocobello, who died in 1998; her brothers, John, Vernon and Richard Wadsworth; and her sisters, Lillian Dewart and Betty Casavant.
She is survived by a daughter Linda Stiles Zapp and her husband, John, of Madison, Ind.; two grandchildren, Nicole and Alex Zapp; several nieces, nephews, cousins and other relatives.
Funeral services were held Tuesday, Nov. 27, at Morgan and Nay Funeral Centre, in Madison, Ind. Burial was in Grandview Memorial Gardens, near Madison, Ind. The family requests memorials in memory of Esther to the Jefferson County Animal Shelter or King's Daughters' Hospital and Health Services Foundation, contribution cards are available at the funeral home.
