Gene Underwood, 78, of Kensington, died Sunday, Jan. 13, 2013, in Salem Community Hospital.
He was born May 13, 1934, in Canonsburg, Pa., to Homer and Tracy (Wern) Underwood. He retired from Bankers Life and Casualty Company where he was an insurance agent, a U.S. Army veteran, a past master of the Augusta Masonic Lodge 504, a past patron of the Augusta OES 412, and the Great Trail Model A'ers. He was also a member of the Carrollton Baptist Temple.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara (Hillyer), whom he married April 6, 1962; a daughter, Kimberly (Mark) Overholt of East Rochester; a sister Catherine Sergent of Sebring; a brother, Lawrence Underwood of East Rochester; two grandchildren, Derek Overholt, and Karla (Daniel) Lane; and two great-grandchildren, Malachi, and Naomi Lane.
He is preceded in death by a son, Gary Underwood; and three brothers, Harold, Homer, Jr. and James Underwood.
Funeral services will be 11 a.m., Friday, Jan. 18, in the Carrollton Baptist Temple, in Carrollton, with Pastor David Powell officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Augusta Cemetery. Calling hours will be Thursday, 6-9 p.m. at the Gotschall-Hutchison Funeral Home in Minerva with Masonic services at 5:45 p.m. Those unable to attend may sign the online register book at www.gotschallfuneralhome.com.
