The Canton Regional Chamber of Commerce recently released a list of the top 10 semifinalists for the 14th annual Teacher-of-the-Year Awards, of which Sherry Laubacher, a 30-year Minerva Local School District multiage primary teacher, is a finalist.
Dennis Tucci has reached a goal most varsity head coaches never dream of--200 wins! The Malvern mentor did so last Friday night as the Hornets defeated Conotton Valley. It took Tucci a total of 17 seasons to accomplish the feat. His current overall record is 200-173.
1990
Two women attending the Minerva Area Senior Citizens Center enjoy the challenge of completing large jigsaw puzzles. Agnes Proctor and Alice Johnson displayed one of their achievements recently completed. It is an unusual 1,000-piece grandfather clock puzzle made from a kit which has a clockwork mechanism and can display the time accurately.
Jason Ludy looked over newspaper clippings from various fires to which the Brown Township Fire Department responded during his tenure as chief. After 11 years at the helm, Ludy retired on Dec. 31, 1989, and has been replaced by his nephew, Roy Ludy.
1980
Mrs. Leland (Betty) Crouse, head cashier and office manager at Kishman's IGA Foodliner, and Bill Clark, store manager of the Carrollton store, were honored for their service. Crouse has worked at the IGA market for 30 years, five with the former owners, Harry and Ruby Sauvain, and 25 years with the current owners, George and Patti Kishman. A trip for two to Bermuda was presented to the honoree. Clark, was honored for 25 years of employment. He started as a stock boy in 1954, while he was a student. He later was promoted to manager of the meat department and finally was appointed store manager at the Carrollton store. A silver tray inscribed, "To Bill and Donna Clark for 25 Years of Splendid Service" was presented to him.
Friend's Gulf Station will close on Jan. 31. Owner/operator Dewight Friend, had been in business since Feb. 17, 1966, almost 14 years. Dewight and wife Mary, who helped him in the business, and their two children, Sandy and Paul, have lived in Malvern for approximately 25 years.
1970
A surprise presentation was made to Miss Myrtle Cross, an employee of the Minerva Banking Company, who served 25 years as a teller. On behalf of the employees, Assistant Cashier Oscar Shaw presented her a charm in appreciation. As Mr. Shaw commented, "Miss Cross has always been faithful, loyal, friendly and prompt." Myrtle, as she is always addressed, is a native of East Rochester and a Minerva High School graduate.
As of press time, Wednesday, the cause was yet undetermined of the train accident Monday, around 4 p.m., when 27 cars of a Penn-Central train were derailed one mile east of Paris on Pleasant Valley Drive, at the overpass of the original New York Central Line, no longer used. The train was traveling east, toward Mingo Junction, from Toledo. The gondola cars, after leaving the rails, careened down the embankment, spilling their cargo of granulated slag, as they hurtled from couplings. The tracks have been cleared, but rail traffic is not yet being routed over the line until repairs can be completed. No one was injured in the derailment.
1960
St. Paul's Evangelical Lutheran Church will be the scene of a Dedication Organ Recital. W. Robert Morrison, organist of First Methodist Church of Canton, will play. Vocalists will be Joe Orin, Miss Virginia Mowls, Mrs. Harold Baxter and Paul Gartner. The organ, a Hillgreen and Lane instrument, costing $15,400, was a gift to the congregation by Mr. and Mrs. Don V. Cross and Mrs. Olivia Cross.
In the weekly poll of Associated Press sportswriters for the state cage teams in the class AA division, the Minerva Lions were rated 17th position with 32 points.
1950
The two scoring specialists of the Oklahoma Indians basketball team are expected to capture the limelight during their exhibition match with the Normandy Inn, to be played on the Minerva High School court, under the sponsorship of the Booster Club. "Fleet Foot" is playing his fourth year with the Indians and is captain of the team. The hardwood speed merchant tops six foot and is currently sporting a 20-point-per-game average. "Flying Duck," playing his third year with the club, recently staged a one-man scoring exhibition against an Aurora, Ill., team, as he went through their defense to tally 50 points. Expected to enter the playing lineup for the Normandy Inn team are semi-pros Jake Yoder, Joe Davis, George Mattis, Jack Street, Dick Strait, Joe Nardo, Houston Schlosser, Carl Thorley, Harold Simpson and Jack Finn. H.C. Kilmark and Art Elliott are managers. The Normandy Inn team won 64 to 61.
Donald Patrick, registered pharmacist of Canton, has joined the staff of the Cross Drug Company. Mr. Patrick, graduate of Ohio Northern University, has served the post nine years in Warren, Youngstown and Canton drug stores.
1940
Miss Charlotte Hawkins has been appointed acting postmistress of the East Rochester Post Office. She succeeds Mr. Frank L. Krieg at the end of this month, who is retiring. Miss Hawkins graduated from Minerva High School in 1931. She worked in Mr. Krieg's general store and the post office for a period of five years.
The seventh annual President's Birthday Ball, a basketball game and a program will be held at the Minerva High School auditorium, as this community's effort to obtain funds to fight infantile paralysis. The Filarets of Rochester, N.Y., World Champion Girls' Basketball Team, meets the Goldenson Vanities of Pittsburgh, Pa., in thrilling cage tilt. Having won 90 straight games, the Filarets feature Miss Susie Sponseller of Minerva, Mrs. Freda and Olympia Savona of Malvern. The Vanities have lost only one clash this season.
