The Minerva High School Drama Club will be presenting a dinner theater at Great Trail Tee House. The club will perform "Murder on the Mount," a murder mystery written by Jan Kennedy. The Greek gods solve a murder that takes place on Mount Olympus. Performers are: Brandon Lautzenheiser, Jess Walker, Jessie Lautzenheiser, Chrissy Archer, Brandon Delaney, Megan Valentine, Tony Cinson, Nathan Meadows, Trista Shriver, and Jen Timmerman, understudy.

Jeremy Fox, a 1995 graduate of Malvern High School, was awarded race driving's 1999 "Driver of the Year" award, when the Northeast Ohio Region of the Sports Car Club of America held its annual awards banquet. He was also presented with the Region's "Championship" Award for Formula Continental. Last year, Fox ran seven races, compiling one pole, one second, two thirds and a fourth. He also qualified for the National Runoffs, where he placed fifth. He is employed as a crew member for DSTP, a pro-formula Atlantic race team based in Chardon.

1990

Jon Cross was the winner of the Pinewood Derby, of Robertsville Cub Scout Pack 174. Other winners were: Dustin Weida and Kyle Krumlauf, with alternate Jimmy Schnabel. Louis Romano, assistant Wapakonochee District commissioner of the Buckeye Council, helped in the judging.

Students in Vonda White's fifth grade reading class at Malvern learned to make pottery using the coil method. After reading a story called, "Maria Martinez was a Potter," the students were given the opportunity to make their own creations of clay. According to White, the students crafted their wares by rolling the clay into long coils, then fashioning the coils into dishes. The clay ware was then baked in a kiln, painted with glaze, and baked again.

1980

Two members of the Minerva High School Symphonic Band have been chosen to play in the All-State Orchestra. They are: Sarah Smith, flutist, and Paul Clark, percussion. The All-State Orchestra is made up of students selected from high schools in the state. Since the wind and percussion sections of an orchestra are small, Minerva High School and The Leader are very proud to have two students chosen for this event.

Malvern High School senior, Greg Steffey, was honored as Malvern's "Sweetheart" at a brief ceremony held last week in the high school gym. First runner-up was Mark Hohler, junior, and second runner-up was Eddie Young, sophomore. Two candidates were chosen from each class, grades 9-12; the three winners were voted on by the entire high school student body, when each student brought as many penny votes.

1970

John Detchon of Minerva caught a 43-pound red beaver in Big Sandy Creek, at the rear of the Pekin plant of Summitville Tiles, Incorporated, where he is employed. The beaver measured 44 inches long, with a tail six and a half inches wide, 12.5 inches long. Detchon, who has lived in Minerva one month, reported he caught a 38-pound beaver in Columbiana County in 1969.

Eugene Dennis, owner of Denny's Market, 119 Market St., was elected secretary of the Tusco Board of Directors during the 22nd annual shareholders meeting, held at Tusco Grocers, Incorporated. Dennis has served on the Tusco board since 1966 and has operated Denny's Market since 1955. Dennis is assisted in the operation of the market by his wife, Gladys, and son, Robert.

1960

Three Tri-County league teams are tied for second-place honors in the race. Since the Lions captured the championship, the three teams are Louisville, Poland and Sebring. The three teams have league records of seven to four.

The Minerva High School Debate Team won second place in the Stark County Class "A" Debate Tournament, held in Louisville. The Louisville debaters won first place. Both schools will compete in the Ohio State Tournament. Six schools competed in the contest: Louisville, Minerva, Canton South, Perry, Jackson and Glenwood. Minerva's Affirmative Team, composed of Todd Smallwood and Borge Ytterstad, defeated Perry and Jackson, and lost to Louisville. The local Negative Team, composed of Charles Dominick and Judi Kurfiss, defeated Glenwood, Canton South and Jackson. Charles Carlson is debate coach.

1950

A Wednesday morning fire at the farmhouse of Mr. and Mrs. Frank Craig, south of Malvern, destroyed three frame buildings and a linotype used in publication of the Community News. Editor Craig reports some insurance on the typecasting machine. It is reported that fire insurance to the buildings will not cover the loss, as they were originally farm buildings and were being used prior to the fire for commercial purpose.

Karl D. Harsh, billiard-parlor and lunch-counter operator in the Eagles building, announced that the entry list is open for a rotation French pool tournament. The tourney will be made up of foursomes, with play to start Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday nights. This type of indoor sport will probably attract upwards to 50 pool players.

1940

Dr. J.J. Uhasz of Cleveland, has taken over the office and practice of the late Dr. T.C. VanPelt. The office is located on the second floor of the Kryder Building, over the A and P Food Store. He is a graduate of Western Reserve Dental School, 16 years ago. Dr. Uhasz has practiced in Massillon, Cleveland State Hospital and St. John's Hospital in Cleveland for five years, and in the plate department of the City Hospital of Cleveland. Dr. Uhasz will be assisted with plate and bridge work by S.L. VanPelt, who has been practicing for 11 years.

A record was broken when Bette Davis landed in the select list with three films, "Dark Victory," "Juarez," and "The Old Maid." It is the first time that any player ever, was represented three times. Of the 10 pictures ranking highest this year, nine of the 10 were shown at the Roxy Theater. This speaks well for the bookings of Manager Michael P. Alexander. The 10 best pictures of the year, in the opinion of the reviewers are as follows: "Goodbye Mr. Chips," "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington," "Pygmalion," "Wuthering Heights," "Dark Victory," "The Women," "The Wizard of Oz," "Juarez," "Stanley and Livingston," and "The Old Maid."
