Minerva Village Fire Department moved into the new fire station. The village's, and the "shared" Paris and West Township trucks, are housed there. The new Dale George Fire Station offers the fire department nine bays, as well as offices. "This fire station was designed for the future," according to Fire Chief Richard "Skip" Everett. The official dedication ceremony will be held in May.
Ashland University has awarded Debra Gill of Malvern a $5,000 Presidential Scholarship to attend the university, based on her academic accomplishments. She attends Malvern High School, where she is a member of Student Council and serves as the treasurer of the National Honor Society. The Presidential Award is presented by A.U. President Dr. G. William Benz, to incoming freshman on high-school grade-point averages and ACT/SAT scores.
1990
Sugar and spice and everything nice has gone into the baked delights made at Neff's Bakery throughout its 25 years in operation. Betty and Harry Neff, owners of this town bakery, observed their silver anniversary of operation of the bakery, on Feb. 1. The bakery is located at 104 East Line St.
Barb Nardo of Malvern will retire after 15 years with GBS Filing Systems. She was honored with a luncheon, during which she was presented a silk flower arrangement. Nardo is a native of Minerva, and a graduate of the high school. She is a former employee of TRW and Diebold.
1980
Gretchen L. Elliott, cashier of the Central Trust Company of northeast Ohio, N.A., has been elected to the additional office of vice president, as was announced by Noble O. Carpenter, president. She began her banking career with the Minerva Savings and Bank Company, which later merged into the Central Trust Company. Gretchen was named assistant cashier in 1971. She is a native of Minerva and attended Minerva High School, Canton College and Mt. Union College.
Zygie Wasik, 17-year old Malvern resident, received his private pilot license at Toronto Airport. Zygie, who is a senior at Malvern High School, first received ground schooling from Carrollton Airport Manager Neil Stranton. After passing a written test in Cleveland, he received private pilot lessons from Reese Fox of Magnolia, and has been accepted by Spartan School, in Tulsa, Ariz., where he will continue his education in aviation.
1970
A number of Minerva-area students have been chosen as members of the Mt. Union College Concert Band. They are Jerry Guthrie, freshman oboe player; Roger Bartley, sophomore contra bass clarinet player; and Cheryl Hahn, a sophomore French horn player.
Donald W. Haynam, 63, sitter-re-winder at Minerva Wax Paper Company, closed out a 30-year employment record with Minerva's oldest industry, founded in 1919. Plant Superintendent Art McCullough presented Haynam with an engraved, gold wristwatch. Haynam started at the company on Feb. 1, 1940.
1960
The Baltimore Orioles of the American League, have signed Burleigh Grimes, former National League "spitball" hurler, to cover the Midwest as a part-time scout. The former major-leaguer, who is now 64 years old, is a former resident of Minerva, and is well-known throughout this area. Hy Myers of East Lincoln Way, is a former teammate of Burleigh's, with the Brooklyn Dodgers of the National League.
Don Walter has been transferred to Minerva, by the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company. Walter began his career with the Metropolitan, Nov. 3, 1958. He has been working in the Alliance territory, servicing the western section of the city. The company, in an attempt to improve service, has established an agency, consisting of Minerva, Augusta, New Franklin and Paris. Walter was made agent for this area.
1950
The Minerva Sportsman's Club's project to construct a lodge on its Pine Hill park land, received a boost from E.D. Rutledge recently, as he gave the barn at the rear of his home to the club to dismantle and to use the lumber for the lodge.
The well-built, slate-roof building was formerly located on Main Street, at the rear of the Watson-Cochran building. Many shows were held in the barn, in days now passed. Some of the showmen that starred there were Charles E. Wilson, now president of General Motors, Roy Haines, heading the sales division of Warner Brothers Pictures, C.J. Manty, oil dealer in Leesburg, Fla., and many others still living in Minerva.
Jack Ansman of Dungannon, became the new operator of Gill's Aladdin Cleaners, at 401 Valley St. in Minerva, recently. He has taken over the duties of his former employer, Bill Gill.
1940
Miss Frieda Ray, a Minerva High School junior, captured first honors in the Oratorical Declamation Division of the annual Tournament for Dramatic Reading, Debate and Declamation, of Stark County's high schools.
Wearing the colors of the Cross Drug Company, James Mitzel, a Minerva bowler, won for himself the recent
Singles Tourney, held in Canton at the Castamall Alley. Mitzel, in the singles event, rolled 221, 213 and 209, for a total of 643. His handicap of 90 pushed him up to a total of 733. Mitzel held a wide margin over the other contenders in the Stark County seat. He lives on East Line Street.
