Jay Wood, branch manager of Citi Financial, and Dale Nissley, director of the Minerva Area YMCA, hold a plaque commemorating the $3,000 donation that Citi Financial has donated to the Minerva Area YMCA. This is the second straight year that Citi Financial has given such a donation. Last year, the check was for $2,500.
Boy Scout Troop 155's caboose has been sold and moved. Selling it was easy. Moving it was not. The caboose was on sale for approximately five days before Ken Yant of Sherrodsville called with an offer. The price of $3,500 was accepted. To move the caboose took a little more time and planning. A crane from Henry A. Selinsky was used as well as two semi-trucks from Mamula Demolition. The crane lifted the body only onto one of the semis while the wheels were carted by the other. Yant, a history and nostalgia buff, plans on setting it up and restoring it near his home.
1990
Some areas around the village quickly became engulfed with water when storm drains could not handle the torrential rains that fell in the village. The National Weather Service at Akron-Canton Airport reported this past July was the third wettest on record with 10.03 inches of rain.
Five Malvern area residents will take part in the National Barefoot Water-ski Championships Aug. 22-26, in Duquoin, Ill. Competing will be Ron Schott, Skip Laughlin, and his son, nine-year old Rocky, and John and Sherri Agler. The five are self-sponsored and will by vying for various awards. All have placed either first or second in the Competitions leading up to the nationals. They report that they have practice between two and three hours a day, seven days a week, at Lake Mohawk.
1980
Although she has done well as a gardener in the past, Nancy Kohl never expected to do this well. Nancy, of 115 W. First St., uncovered a real surprise in her garden: a 13.5 inch, seven-pound zucchini . She said it was a first time attempt at growing the vegetable, and the results were more than she anticipated.
Don Tucci, Mike Henry, Steve DeDent, and Glen Clark are members of the All Seasons softball team which has a 36 and 9 record so far this year. Tucci, Clark and Henry were named to the All State Tournament Team. Tucci, Clark and DeDent were All League First Team. All Seasons came in first place in the Amsterdam Memorial Day Tournament, where District 15 Champs, Carroll County Recreational League Champs, and Classic State runners- up.
1970
David D. Mitzel, radio dispatcher at the police station the past three years, will leave his post Aug. 18. Mitzel is departing for Houston, Texas, where he enrolled in the bachelor of arts degree program for ministry at Gulf Coast Bible College. He is a graduate of Minerva High School class of 1967. He is a member of East Line Street Church of God, where he has been an active leader in youth work. He was also a part-time employee of the Bartley Funeral Home.
Robert Eddy of Minerva has purchased Buckeye Protective Service, Inc. Established in 1943, the company is located in the Millett Building in Canton. Employing 30 people, Eddy stated that the company specializes in plant protection. Eddy worked for 12 years in the accounting department of the Massillon plant of Republic Steel Corp.
1960
Tony Krall, operator of Yoder Airport at Louisville for several years, has been moved to his new facilities at the Minerva Airport. He will operate a flying school and offer other aviation services at the Airport which is located just off of Myers road, northwest of Minerva. He has completed the erection of a hanger repair shop.
New teachers in the Augusta school system are: Cora Ramsey of Kensington, who will teach first-grade filling a vacancy created by Lena Hawk who has retired; and Clyde Kretzinger of Malvern, who has been hired to fill the vacancy left by Sam Vanbinder who accepted a position in the Carrollton High School.

The Colunbiana County Sheriff may have a strange Case developing for his office to solve. Mystery lovers might call it "The Case of the Perennial Chicken Thefts from East Rochester Widows." Seventy chickens were stolen form Mrs. Edna Boord near East Rochester one night last week. The chickens, averaging five pounds each in weight, were to have been sold the following day by Boord. Strangely enough, one year ago 100 chickens were stolen from another widow living near East Rochester.
1940
Stan Roser, manager of the local Isaly Dairy Store, reached his quota in ice cream sales and won a trip to the baseball game between the Cleveland Indians and Boston Red Sox in Cleveland. Roser Accompanied winning managers from Alliance, Canton and Salem to the game.
Dr. C.T. Lowe of Cincinnati has purchased the dental office of the late T. C. Van Pelt and will open it for business on Monday. Dr. Lowe formerly had an office here from 1934-1936. He has been in Cincinnati for the past few years.
