The threesome of Alice Beadnell, Julie Sebrell and Betty Griffith competed in the annual hog-wrestling contest at the West Township Ruritan Homecoming. The Minerva residents had 60 seconds to pick up their hog and put it into a barrel. Unfortunately, time ran out before the ladies could complete what they had set out to accomplish. Despite the no-score, all three had smiles on their muddy faces after the event.

Malvern senior, Matt Richards recorded his first hole-in-one on July 17 as he aced the 18th hole at Great Trail Golf Course. He used a driver on the par 4, 280 yard hole for the first ace of his young career. It also counted as his first double-eagle.

1990

Gerald Wartman was voted Golfer of the Year at the Minerva Senior Men's Tournament. Wartman was chosen to receive this award by his fellow golfers for showing ability, sportsmanship, and golfing interest. He has been playing golf for 53 years. His best score ever was a 63 at Edgewater Golf Course.

Barbara Romano, a 1962 graduate of Malvern High School, has accepted the position of dean of students at her alma mater for the 1990-1991 school year. She will report directly to Principal Ed Bode and will assist him with minor discipline referrals and follow up on punishments. The position is a half-day job. Romano will continue to teach junior-high math during the other half of the day.

1980

Brown Township firefighters are keeping a wary eye on the remains of the manufacturing plant of the Cambridge Mill Products Co. after a Tuesday night fire leveled the structure. Brown Township Volunteer Fire Department received the call Tuesday sometime before 5 p.m., and found the building, used to refine wax for other area industries, burning heavily upon arrival. They immediately put in assistance calls to Minerva, Carrollton and Robertsville. The fire was under control at 10 p.m.

Dean Offenberger, head instructor at Malvern Karate Center, earned his black belt in karate on Aug. 14, from Central Tae Kwon Do Association and the United States Karate Association. A former student and instructor at Minerva Martial Arts School, Dean has been studying karate for the last four years. His daughter, Dawn, is studying karate under the supervision of Dean and is a second-degree brown belt. Dawn's next promotion will be her black belt.

1970

Postmaster Don Davis has announced that the outgoing mailbox has been removed from North Main Street and is now situated on West High Street in front of the post office. This action has removed a serious safety hazard for drivers suddenly stopping to deposit their mail on the highly traveled street. The mailbox situated at the corner of Lincoln Way and North Market Street has been removed for the same safety reason.

A six pound guinea bean, which measures 43 inches long and 10.5 inches in circumference, was brought into the Minerva Leader by Thomas Marteney, an employee of Penn-Central Railroad. He planted the seeds expecting a normal growth of 18 inches. He also reports finding a larger bean in the garden Monday.

1960

A group from the Future Nurses Club at Minerva High School completed a 10-hour standard American Red Cross First Aid course and will receive certificates. Mary Marteney taught the class. Those completing the work were Louis Starkey, Jacqueline Starkey, Jacqueline Sanor, Marine Milliken, Karen Rue, Barbara Clapper and Brenda Dieringer.

Mrs. Lester Taylor was interviewed on the television station WEWS during the "One O'clock Club" program. She attended the show along with a group of ladies who were attending the state convention of the Daughters of America. Mrs. Taylor is treasurer of Tri-Council 250 here and deputy over Molly Stark Council No. 60, in Alliance.

1950

Scores of friends and residents in the Minerva community attended an open house at the Rutledge-Jackson Funeral Home in Minerva last week. The firm marked its 100th year in business on those dates and invited the public to visit the building's remodeled interior and commemorate the occasion.

Glen Lautzenheiser and Bill Wickersham will play the championship match for the first flight honors; and Jack Herr and Bob Blanc met for second-flight honors in the Edgewater Golf Course tournament. Lautzenheiser won 7 and 6 over and Paul Johnson and Wickersham won 4 and 2 over Cliff Chamberlain to advance into the last round in the first flight. Blanc won over Carl Harsh with a 1-up count and Herr won 5 and 3 over Bob Davies to go into the last round of the second flight.

1940

A majority of stores in Minerva will close a half day on Friday, Aug. 16, which is Homecoming Day and Night at the 17th annual Minerva Exposition of Progress and Homecoming. A survey was made this week by Fred Mosier of the Associated Credit Bureau, and according to his report, a majority of the stores are in favor of closing at noon on Aug. 16.

Milk prices are up. Quarts advanced from 10 cents to 11 cents. Pints are still 6 cents.
