St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Minerva and St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Malvern announce their Lenten Schedule for 2017. In addition to their regular weekend Mass Schedule: Saturday 4 p.m. at St. Francis and 6 p.m. at St. Gabriel; and Sunday 8:30 a.m. at St. Francis and 10:30 a.m. at St. Gabriel, both parishes announce the following services.
The Stations of the Cross will be celebrated on Monday evening at 7 p.m. alternating churches each week. St. Gabriel on March 6, 20 and April 3. St. Francis will celebrate the Stations of the Cross on March 13, 27 and April 10. Immediately following this service will be a video-discussion group "Into the Heart of God: Jean Vanier Explores the Gospel of John in the Holy Land." This program will also be repeated every Thursday at 1 p.m. in the annex classroom at St. Gabriel, Minerva.
"Faith and Fellowship Group" will be held in the St. Gabriel Annex classroom on Tuesday mornings from 10 a.m.-12 noon, following the 9 a.m. Daily Mass and recitation of the Rosary. This group is reading, "Resisting Happiness" by Matthew Kelly.
The Bible Study Group meets on Thursday evenings from 7-8:30 pm. They will study the Pastoral Letters: Titus, Timothy and the Letter to the Hebrews. The Daily Celebration of Mass is offered on Monday and Wednesday at St. Francis at 8 a.m., and on Tuesday and Thursday at 9 a.m. at St. Gabriel. A lay led Communion service is offered at St. Gabriel on Friday at 9 a.m.
A Communal Penance Service will be held on Tuesday, April 4 at 7 p.m. at St. Francis for all area parishes, especially Malvern, Minerva, Carrollton, Morges and Waynesburg. Individual confessions are held on Saturdays at St. Gabriel from 2-2:45 p.m. and at St. Francis from 3:15-3:45 p.m.
The parishes will again participate in Operation Rice Bowl, conducted by Catholic Relief Services. This program assists the poor and suffering in 91 countries on the basis of need, without regard to race, religion or nationality. Each participant is given a "rice bowl" container to be placed on the dining room table. Sacrificial offerings are placed in the container and then returned to church on Holy Thursday, April 13th. Along with the container, a special weekly meatless recipe is suggested to place us in solidarity with the poor people of that country. 25 percent of the funds received will be used for local needs.
Both parishes are offering their Lenten Fish Fry dinners every Friday until April 8th with a variety of menu options. Call Ahead Carry-Out dinners are also available. St. Gabriel from 4:307 p.m. (330-868-4610). St. Francis from 5-7 p.m. (330-863-0760).
