Young men experience government first hand

Published:

The American Legion's Buckeye Boys State is a nine day event held at Bowling Green University each June for high schoolers interested in learning more about how democracy operates.

The participants experience government at the local, county, and state levels, as well as the organization of political parties.

Malvern High School delegates included Eric Hain, Evan Green, and Jeremy Lynch. Ryan Smith and Austin Fraley represented Minerva High School.

Hain was elected county commissioner. Green was a councilman in the fictitious "Stellar City." Lynch spent the week working as mayor and school board member in "Suhr City."

Fraley was a member of the State Trooper Protection Unit and Smith worked as a loan officer for the bank in "Baker City."

Some of the activities at Buckeye Boys State included political conventions, newspaper staff, recreation time, debates and elections.
