Minerva library offers students a fine waiver

Published:

The Minerva Public Library is offering a "back-to-school" special to area students.

To help local students start off the school year on the right foot, the Minerva Public Library has forgiven all outstanding overdue fines on all library cards belonging to Minerva library patrons under the age of 18. This one-time waiver unblocks library cards for students who did not manage to get library materials returned on time and ended up with too many overdue fines.

Library Director Tom Dillie said, "We knew there were a good number of kids who could no longer check out on their cards because of the fines. We talked it over among the staff and with the library board and decided to give everyone under 18 a one-time break at the start of this school year. Our hope is that those kids who could not check out over the past few months, or years, will come back and start using the library again."

Dillie emphasized this promotion forgives overdue fines, but not the charges for library materials that were checked out and never returned at all.

"The library spends its public money carefully, and we could not in good conscience simply forgive billed charges for library items that people have chosen not to return. However," he continued," we really do want the materials back. And students who return long-overdue items in good condition will have those billed charges waived as well."

Library staff are ready to help students, their caregivers, and their teachers, make this school year a good one. Visit the library at 677 Lynnwood Drive, on the web at www.minerva.lib.oh.us; or call the library at 330-868-4101.
