The Muskingum Lakes Chapter of the American Red Cross will hold a hero writing contest, giving area youth a chance to show off their creativity and writing skills.
On April 12, the winning students will be honored at the Hometown Heroes' Dinner at the Tuscarawas County Senior Center's Myron Phillips Hall and each will receive a $100 U.S. Savings Bond.
The youth writing contest is open to Carroll, Harrison, and Tuscarawas county students. Grades kindergarten through two will submit a coloring sheet, and grades three to 12 will submit an original essay, short story or poem. The deadline for the contest is Feb. 18.

Contest criteria
• A student must be enrolled in Harrison, Carroll or Tuscarawas county, grades kindergarten through 12.
• All entries must be signed by a parent, guardian or teacher, confirming the work is original.
• Mark all entries "Hero Writing Contest."
• The deadline for entries is Feb. 18.
Grades 3-12:
• Entries must be original essays, short stories or poetry.
• Entries must be no more than 500 words.
• Entries must be typed or handwritten (using blue or black ink).
Topics are:
Grades K-2 - Hero Coloring Contest
Grades 3- 5 - "A movie hero I admire and why. . ." (written entry)
Grades 6-8 - "What is the modern hero?" (written entry)
Grades 9-12 -- "A military hero I know, past or present" (written entry)
